Promoting the Applications of Geographic Information

  
    Since its embarkation in 2002, the National Digital Archival Program has accumulated 3,241,721 pieces of digital materials. Within them, maps and remotely sensed imagery are included as a content subject for archives. Besides of the domestic efforts, research institutes in US and Japan are also interested in digitizing their collections of Taiwan’s old maps. Along with the advancement of geospatial technology, the meaning of GIS has shifted from system, science to service, implying a paradigm shift from technology oriented to user oriented. This research concentrates on promoting the applications of GIS for academic, social and education purposes. Following on the objective of this group research, the tasks of this are listed below. 

  1. Survey and research: To comprehend the current progress of geographic information in digital archives program and potential usages. Adopting the concept of innovation diffusion, this research aims to identify bottlenecks and impediments of GIS distribution so to foster its applications. 
  2. Education promotion: Survey and compile the digital collection of geographic information and set up a data dissemination mechanism so that available data can be freely circulated among educators. This program will organize workshops to introduce and promote the application of GIS in academic and education usages. 
  3. Social relevance: Combining the expertise from technology, legislation and social concern, this research will propose a data dissemination mechanism to empower the function of geographic information. Through seminars and conferences,  the program promotes the adoption of GIS in social and humanity research on issues include narrowing the social divide and inequality.
